Back in the '80s, I raised a baby Robin in the kitchen after it fell out of the nest. Once he had feathers, I tried to teach him to fly by putting him on my finger and dropping my hand. He flew in a circle and landed at my feet. I tried again with the same result, so I knew he couldn't be released yet. He must have broken a bone in the fall, which I didn't notice. Anyway, it was another 2 weeks before he corrected enough to fly in a straight line, from living room to dining room. By then, he was pretty tame. He had a routine for most of that summer. He'd say out all night (there was none among us willing to get up at 4:30 to let him greet the morning sun). Then, he'd come visit for lunch (the crumbs from my kids' PB&Js), a nap and a preening session in the kitchen, then fly against my back door to go back out mid-afternoon. In the early evening, he would beg at almost every house on the block for raisins, earthworms, and crickets from neighborhood kids. To this day, I've never met a bird of any size that will turn down raisins! Oh, and OF COURSE, my kids called him Christopher.
Yay Chubb, we’re so proud of you. You’re awesome for what you do. I know his confidence will get better before you know it. He’ll be flying across the room.
